Marketing 101: A Career, A Passion, An Assignment

Hurray! I am finally writing a blog post on Marketing, something that has been in the pipeline for some time. I am grateful for this opportunity and feel lucky that you are reading this. 😁

In this blog post, I will cover three topics:

  • What is Marketing?
  • How to start a career in Marketing?
  • Must-have resources for any Marketer.

What is Marketing?

Marketing can be easy to misunderstand these days since almost every organization has a marketing unit, and the way it is operated differs. Whether you want to become a marketer or not, or admire the profession at all, depends on the type of organization you visit and its style of operation.

Regardless of what you might have been exposed to, Marketing is a noble job and an integral part of every organization. If you find yourself on this career path, you must see yourself as a problem-solver. In his book, This is Marketing, Seth Godin describes Marketing as "the generous act of helping someone solve a problem. Their problem."

What does that mean? Let's go back to the dictionary meaning of Marketing.

According to the American Marketing Association, Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.

This tells you that Marketing is bigger than the misconception of it as just the process of promoting and selling goods and services. It is much much bigger than that.

Marketing understands audience needs and wants

One of the current trends is Affiliate Marketing; and I see a lot of people doing something wrong:  reusing the same messages and communication (boringly). If you are not close to those marketers, you will have no idea how frustrated they are.

To effectively market to people, you must begin with the process of picking the product to market. Ask yourself: is this something that my contact list will be interested in? Do I have to be on a platform to sell this?

Those are just two out of the many questions you need to ask.

You don't market a product you hope people will like, you market a product you know people will like.

Marketing puts it in your face

As a marketer, you have to be on top of your customer's minds. They have a lot they are thinking about. If you have done your assignment in ensuring that the product/service you are marketing is what your audience needs, you need to bring it up to their face at every opportunity.

There is something called the exposure effect, or mere-exposure effect, that was first postulated by the psychologist Robert Zajonc in the 1960s. It suggests that people respond to things that they have been repeatedly exposed to.

This means that the more you show people that you have a certain thing and believe it's for them, the more they see the need for it.

Marketing has to do with perception

Customer perception breaks or makes a marketing campaign. It is super important for you to know what the customers think about your brand; knowing it becomes a hack for planning a successful marketing communication.

How to start a career in Marketing

Did you study science? Let me let you in on a little secret. I have colleagues who are doing amazingly well in the marketing field but actually studied science.

Everyone is already a marketer, and anyone can be a professional marketer.

How do you go about it?

Acquire the skills you need: A marketer has good communication, negotiation, and time management skills. These are learnable characteristics that you can start investing your time in getting.

Acquire the experience: Sign up for roles like Social Media Management, etc. Get involved in a place where you can learn.

Package yourself & your CV: You can market well? Now market yourself to the interviews and let them see the reason why they need you.
